“Giant of Improvisation”: The Harry Pepl Archive Goes Online
Five rediscovered concert recordings and 413 press documents: harrypepl.com opens the estate of Austrian guitarist and composer Harry Pepl (1945–2005).
VIENNA, AUSTRIA, October 27, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Five rediscovered concert recordings, 413 press documents and a body of work spanning European jazz and early digital studio practice: harrypepl.com makes the estate of Austrian guitarist, composer and innovator Harry Pepl accessible for the first time through a growing online archive.Rediscovering an original voice in European jazz
Le Monde called him a “giant of improvisation”; Der Standard ranked him among the world’s most significant guitarists. Harry Pepl (1945–2005) played with Benny Goodman, Jack DeJohnette, Michel Portal, Werner Pirchner and Wolfgang Puschnig. He wrote three works for the internationally renowned Kronos Quartet; two of them received their world premieres in Graz in 1991. His students in Graz include Wolfgang Muthspiel, who named a 2004 album after Pepl’s composition “Air, Love & Vitamins”. In his later work, Pepl’s Real-time Composing brought improvised tracks together to create a virtual band. Pianist and jazz researcher Stefan Heckel devoted his dissertation “Instant Composing”, completed in 2024 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, to this work. In 2026, US jazz historian Scott Yanow, author of “The Great Jazz Guitarists”, wrote: “Your father was a very good and original guitarist and deserves to be remembered.”
From a musical estate to an open resource for research
The archive combines journalistic research, scholarly verifiability and direct access to the music. As of 23 October 2026, it lists 114 releases, 193 works, 278 people, 276 chronology entries, 413 press documents, 114 bibliographic entries, 171 photographs, 49 videos and 318 quotations. An online finding aid provides access to twelve collections. Ten recordings spanning five decades are freely available to hear, with more than 40 additional recordings available through personal access. The album “Live” by Harry Pepl (tape) & The (Lonely) Single Swinger Band shows how Pepl’s music lives on in performance today: musicians improvise with his original tracks, and in 2025 the album took second place at the Austrian Jazz Award.
New discoveries reshape the picture
The initial research has already uncovered five previously unknown concert recordings in the catalogue of France’s INA, most of them from Paris. Posters held by the Wienbibliothek documented a dozen additional performances in Vienna, while international festival archives supplied further evidence. Musical collaborators including Furio Di Castri and Bo Stief contributed their recollections. “By far the largest part of the estate has not even been examined yet. The archive is a beginning: it makes what is there visible, provides evidence for every statement and invites researchers, musicians and the media to continue the work with us,” says Daniel Pepl, editor of the archive.
